The hopper-dropper is a large dry hopper [or BLT,or Club Sandwich, or Chero Ant] with an 18-24" lighter tippet tied off the hook bend with a hare's nymph, pt, or something similiar dropped off the back. The fish may hit the hopper - or the dropper nymmph. If they hit the nymph the hopper acts as a "bobber". It's quite a productive system at times.

    Hey FG,

I fish a hopper dropper a lot here in
SC for red eared sunfish. I like the
Souhegan Hopper as tied by Alberto for a
fly of the week here. I fish a scud on a
dropper from the hoppers hook bend, anywhere
from 6 to 24 inches depending on the depth
being fished. Very effective combo for me
and increases my red ear to blue gill
    ration considerably. Warm regards, Jim

    fishy guts:
when I want to do a dropper I use the flies I have tied directly for it. When your tying a big dry or terrestrial, tie in a small loop of tippit under the tail. I've found that if you tie it in tight enough and use some super glue, it dosn't break off. Then just tie some extra tippit to the loop of tippit.

Fishy guts, a Turks will work. Use any big, floaty fly you want. Tie the dropper tippet to the bend of your dry just like you would tie it to the eye.

You can use anything that floats high enough to support the "dropper". Hoppers, poppers, trantulas, indicatators (bobbers) with a hook.
