    Default Turkey Feather PT

    While tying this afternoon I looked at the nice male turkey tail fan hanging on my wall (it was a 22 pounder). So I worked out one feather and tied a TT nymph(vs. PT). The barbles I used were from the dark band at the top and it came out almost black and it seems to be a bit fuzzier that a PT. I even thought the material was more supple and easy to work.
    Anyone tried this?

    I've done it and caught browns on them. I wouldn't agree that mine is easier than pheasant for tying though.

    I like turkey for wing cases in lieu of PT. I've also tied some flies with turkey tail for bodies, but haven't tied many for lack of need.

    You have discovered one of the best things about fly tying. Experimenting with materials! Scott

    A TT nymph makes a nice immitation for the small black stoneflies we get here in New England in early season. However, on the few I have tied, I chose to use dark dun hen feather fibers for the tail, as the turkey fibers seem so fragile (i.e. more fragile than PT fibers).

    Peter F;
    I had thought it would make a nice stonefly.
    I need some in my box. I'll email you a request for your pattern.
