Thread: Bisecting thread for a loop

  1. #1

Default Bisecting thread for a loop

On the other thread "the split thread dubbing loop" term was used so I don't know what to call the technique of bisecting the strand of thread say with a bodkin....any way is there a particular thread that has to be used /...or are the some that absolutely won't work?

    ducksterman,

Some threads are more suitable, though all I have tried will work. Even 'bonded' Uni.

Good candidates I use for the split thread technique are Danville Flymaster 6/0, all Benecchi threads and Marc Petitjean 'split second' thread.

I am sure there are others, but these three work very well.

    Cheers,
    Hans W

    Another tip:
Try using a sewing machine needle instead of the standard bodkin to split the thread. The sewing machine needle seems to be a better ergonomic design.

I just use my bodkin needle. First spin the bobbin to remove any twist in the thread. Then stroke the thread a few time with the side of the needle to flatten in out into a 'floss', pierce the center of the 'floss' with the tip of the needle and slide it up and down to seperate the strands.

Some theads don't split easily. For my split thread dubbing I like Wapsi UTC ultra thread or Danville, UNI doesn't seperate as easily.

lou- I agree, but let me add that even with sewing machine needles there are choices to make. The "sharps" are less helpful than the ball point styles in this case. You'd want a needle with a rounded tip rather than a cutting tip so that your dubbing thread is less likely to be cut in the process of dividing it.
