He had done much to spread his good cheer, knowledge and true passion for fly-fishing and life.
I have some of his books , videos and tapes, One that comes to mind is Fly Fishing the Mountain lakes
a delightful read. The book has his phone number in it,

I called and spoke with Gary while visiting the last chance area in Idaho, I could feel
his enthusiasm over the phone then and now, even today, every time I read his books.

Great Interview. Just by listening to his answers to the questions, you can tell he was well educated and
dedicated to his sport. I think most flyfishers feel the same thoughts when they are "on the water'.
I bought his book "Caddisflies" several years ago......... best book I ever bought.

Most recently John Scott has posted on his FEB pattern, Joe for his threaded leaders
and of course our very own Neil and Dee just to name Four.

Searching and reading from this site will and has turned any/many level fisherman
into better/polished fly fishers.

Mel had a wondrful way of showing enthusiasm that is contagious to say the least..

I was fortunate to meet Mel at the Golden Gate casting club some years ago,
he was a very entertaining gentlemen,
After that exchange I frequented the club over several years occasionally seeing him there
giving a casting lesson. Many times indirectly watching as he instructed a group
on the joy of casting.

I hope some will look at the clip I posted, his energetic style comes through clear.
between him , Gary and Bob Jacklin I finally got the feel and love for the cast .
or as Mel coined the the phrase " the essence of the cast "

I do not consider myself a great caster but I enjoy showing anybody interested
the basics of the cast , with that energetic style that rubbed off on me...

Who or what most influened you on your journey to become a better caster?
Anyone having trouble learning to cast ? Have a question , I bet a member here
can help...

I used to attend his annual fly casting clinic at the GGCC. I also saw him many times over the years at the ponds and he always gave me some pointers to improve my casting. He loved being a teacher.
