Is there a more popular color for the mop ?

I've had good luck with the same basic pattern in two separate colors, chartreuse and cream. Rest of the fly is the same.

Hook: Curved caddis hook, size 10, use a beadhead on it
Thread: black
Body: mop "finger"
Thorax: peacock dubbing

Orange is a great color as well, especially in the fall. I like to use one or two wraps of a long orange soft hackle which adds lost of movement to the fly in the water.

The first mop fly I tied was fluorescent orange, with pieces borrowed from a friend, and it worked, to my surprise, and I caught a couple of trout, rock bass and sunfish on it. As I acquired more mops/gloves I found colors like fluorescent orange, chartreuse, white, cream, yellow and gray that I used for larger mop flies tied on hooks size 8 to size 2...I initially found mini-mops in cream and gray, "fingers" suitable for tying on size 10 and size 12 hooks. I also found that the cream could be dyed. Below is the initial mini mop flies I tied up'T

The original cream is in the top right and the gray is at the bottom. I've since found the smaller mop "fingers" in fluorescent orange and chartreuse.
What colors. Large mop flies, up to 2 1/2 inches long. White, chartreuse, yellow and fluorescent orange in descending order. Mini-mops, tied on size 10 and size 12 hooks, fluorescent orange, chartreuse, red and black.

The core of the mop is thick enough that it can be threaded through the hook and secured at the front where the thorax would start.

I haven't tried threading the larger pieces on the hook. I don't think the larger pieces I use have a sturdy enough core to do it and the smaller pieces are to thin to do it. I'll have to give it a shot and see if I can do it with the larger ones. The more recent ones I've been tying is I wrap down the piece, cover it with sparkle chenille or estaz, and then put some super glue on top of the shank to hold the piece that's over that area in place. Seems to increase the durability of the fly.

Philly, I use a TMC2488 curved caddis hook, pretty thin wire - maybe that's helping?

I use either a jig hook or Daiichi 1120 use yellow orange red cream tan brown chartreuse green and there is a FB page dedicated to Mop flies
