Default Ant Acid fly as offered by Rainey's

I have some additional materials on order so that I can tie some of these. I think this pattern is a good representation of an ant. It has three separate "lobes" (if that is what they are called) while most patterns only have two.

This pattern is from Kelly Galloup of Slide Inn in Montana. You have to look closely in this photo, but there is a strip of metallic style gold mylar extending to the end of the rear lobe.

Galloup stresses that the lobes should be dubbed in two different colors/shades. This adds to the "separation" of the lobes.

Not sure. I think a size 14. The one tied by Kelly Galloup in his video of how to tie this pattern is tied on a size 14.

    Looks good, PT

Meant to ask: how do you find this pattern's effectiveness compared with other ant patterns??

    Byron,

I was going to use that pattern on a trip I took up to the Sierras two weeks ago. The water levels, weeds and silting in the East Walker River were dreadful. My son and I went over to the Nevada side and fished there as well. The best fishing we experienced was in the lakes. I am going to try some on the Lower Owens River next month. What worked and a full report on our trip is here:

If I could, I would photograph one from beneath the surface as the trout see them. I think, from that vantage, the pattern, especially in size 16-18 (or like the #17's PT shows above), would mimic an ant.
