I am a newbie, but that means I have lost a lot of tippet and have to re tie a lot. I have been using a double uni knot and it seems to work well!

I guess I didn't think this out too good. I didn't even realize my fly to tippit must be a good one. There I use a rapala knot. I use a palomar knot on larger flies.
I probably need to examine the break closer to see if it's possibly the leader failing and not the tippit.
I'll have to give that figure eight knot a try. Never used it.

Someone mentioned the Pitzen. I use this knot a lot for tippet to fly. I use a double Pitzen (well actually, a double 16-20) to tie mono leader to flouro tippet. It is tied similarly as a blood knot is to the clinch. Someone gave me the hint - since I am so proficient with this 16-20 knot it was easy to do the splice this way. I did learn the knot held much better when I pull the tag ends very tight before seating the knot.
