    Default K's Synful Dun SBS

An all petrochemical by-product variation of Brad Downey's poly-winged Sparkle Dun. The 2-tone wing's an attempt at improved visibility; not necessary but my eyes aren't what they used to be (all black works well, too, in dull, flat-light conditions). I tried stacking the black on top of the dun but couldn't get the wing to fan properly in smaller sizes like this, so I tried the cross-ways tie in and got the effect I was looking for; your mileage may vary. Tied here as a BWO; change colors to suit your needs.

    hook - Dai Riki 300 #18
thread - MFC 8/0 dark olive
    shuck - Zelon olive brown
    body - tying thread
    wing - Congo Hair dun/black
thorax - Fine & Dry dubbing olive grey

    Part 1

mash barb, start thread, tie in shuck, fold and wrap back to bend; trim (shank length)

tie in a hank of black CH along the shank

tie in dun CH on the perpendicular

pull it all up, lock in place with cross wraps at the base

dub thread/dub thorax; half hitch x 2, SHHAN

That last one reminds me of some of the guys I went to high school with. Pity none of the old gang has enough hair to pull that one off, these days...
The flies do look nice and I might add them to my list of things to try. I might try one as a "redhead" (orange) in size 10 or 12 for bluegills.

    Ed

    David,

Congo Hair is a polypropylene yarn, similar to stuff like EP Fibers, Widow's Web, Gator Hair, etc, but a lot cheaper; sheds water, making it very useful for dry fly wings, and comes in a wide variety of colors. Fly Tyers Dungeon is the only place I know that sells it, which is a whole separate topic.
