Thread: Greasing Fly/Leader

    Default Greasing Fly/Leader

I've read about and heard people speak of greasing the fly or the leader when fishing midges or nymphs.

Can someone please explain what this means and how it's done?

It's a term for applying floatant. Something like Gerhke's Gink for a fly floatant or Mucilin for a leader floatant.

You use it to help keep the pattern floating high, rather than being drawn slightly under from the leader. I usually run it from the fly up the leader about 8" or so.

I "grease" the fly, the tippet the leader and even the line to keep everything floating high.
The man who coined the phrase "Money can't buy happiness", never bought himself a good fly rod!

A piece of monofiliment lodged into the surface tension of the water is considerably more visible than one submerged. Greasing a leader is only a good idea when the fly you're using doesn't float well.
