A 6wt rod uplined with a 7wt line is a cheaper option rather than a new rod.I fish a Scott Heliply 6wt with 7wt lines all the time in SW and FW.Makes a nice bass rod and able to throw 2/0 gurglers and 1/0 Clousers.Another option is a Redington Predator 6wt.I have the 7'10" and its really a 7wt rod. This thing will handle large flies and has lots of backbone to drag bass out of cover.Just depends on which way you want to go.

I use an 8 wt; 8.5'; fiberglass rod (relatively stiff) throwing clouser minnows and larger poppers. I've caught larger bass in the 3# to 5+# range and like having the "back bone" the rod has. In contrast I've also have used a 6 wt 8 footer with good results. The trick is like what you have! Enjoy getting out!

I've asked my wife for a 9ft 7wt BVK rod for christmas. My plan is to use it for bass around lilly pads and heavy cover from my new kayak I'm getting after christmas. So, I think I've made up my mind. Thanks for all the help!

I use a 7/8 wt. Scientific Anglers rod with a fighting butt. It has always worked fine for me. It may be a little too much in the budget category for you, but I have tried more expensive rods, and I have never found any that I like better than what I have, at least not enough to justify the price. It does great at pitching bugs and Puglisi fish.
