    Default Dunc's Dragon (aka Floating Carey) SBS



    Fewer moving parts than the Kaufmann floater, fish it in a similar way. Cool fly from Duncan Laird; thanks to the folks over on Washington Flyfishing for cluing me in on this one.

    hook - TMC 5212 #6
    thread - UTC 140 brown olive/UTC 70 wood duck
    body - deer hair mixture
    hackle - pheasant rump


    Part 1

    Take a little of this




    this




    this




    more of this




    and a lot of this




    clean, trim the tips, throw it in a bag and mix it up




    mash barb, attach thread




    take a clump of the deer hair mix, 2 soft loops, spin and pack

    repeat




    up the hook shank; tie off, cut thread




    flip it over, lay a razor blade on the hook eye as a reference and push it back to the tail




    rough cuts




    refined cuts (keep a shop vac handy)




    re-attach thread (switched to smaller thread to keep bulk down; optional)




    select a pheasant rump feather with barbs hook shank length; tie in by butt, sweep fibers back while wrapping forward

    Another great SBS, thanks! For mixing deer hair, another technique you can use is by using your hair stacker. This only lets you do it one clump at a time but gives the same effect. Put smaller amounts of deer hair into the stacker and then use a popsicle stick to mix them up. Give the stacker a couple taps to even out the hair and you end up with a mixed bunch. You wont be able to do it by the bagful like in your technique, but you also wont have to try to get a mess of hair into a stacker.

    I learned this technique from an article by Ward Bean in an old issue of Fly Tyer magazine. I wrote a Tying Tip article for this website some years ago.
