    Default Extreme Thorax Style

I used two different sized hackles on this fly. A shorter one at the mid-point of the hook than that used fore and aft of the wings.

It seems more in line with the insect's leg positions. I did it to see if it might also add a bit to the stability of the fly. It seems to, at least on the tying table.

Nice, Byron. What is the hook size and the size of the hackles? Is the front one sized to the hook and the back one just one size smaller?

    Joe,
Thanks. Yes, the wing area hackles are a size or so larger than the rear one. The hook is a size 14.

So, the wing hackle is a 14 and the other is a 16?

The back legs might be more like a 17...I did not measure....just compared against the fore hackle to make it shorter.

Joe, Not to bore you, but I tied another slightly different pattern which might make it easier to see. I think, if the hackle at the mid-point isn't shorter, the fly would tend to tip forward and lose the float line.

Anyway, I think this shows the different lengths of the hackle fibers?

    Thanks,
    Byron

Thanks, Byron. I was just curious if you used the "normal" size hackle in the front for the corresponding hook.
