Hey folks,
Looking for good sources of free chain bead. Anybody have any ideas? I'm kind of soft-hackle crazy after looking at John M's and McTage's carp flies, and almost all have the chain-bead eyes on them.

Don't know about free, but you can get it at places like Home Depot; I'm willing to pay for stainless bead chain (even fly shops don't charge that much for it) so I don't have to worry about flies rusting up.

I used to get mine from the bank! They have pens on bead chain. The bead chain often gets broken. If you ask nicely they will happily give you the broken ones. I usually offer to make a donation to whatever charity the staff are supporting. (It's commonplace here for them to support one.)
Cheers,
C.
Join the Army, they gave me a really long one, long lasting too. Have you checked at your local dollar store, Hobby Lobby, Wallyword?

I'm looking at the humor in the original question:
"Looking for good sources of free chain bead."
How about bad sources or would they be illadvised? But really, c'mon. You've probably spent a lot of money on your fishing and tying stuff so now you're looking for 'FREE' Stuff'. I guess I always find it interesting that fly fishermen spent 000s of dollars on rods/reels/tying stuff(if they tye) but balk at the price, even when they're very cheap, for a decently tyed fly.
Anyway, maybe you'll find some source, good or bad, for free chain beads.
As an update to all, local hardware store had it for $.55 per foot. Marvelous!
When I am at street fairs or county fairs I check out any free key chains with beaded chain given away by political candidates, organizations, and companies that may be giving away items to polish their image. I have found some with chains with muti-faceted faces on the beads instead of round beads. Also, I have found some that are chromed instead of the standard brass color.

" Fishermen, hunters, wood choppers, and others,
spending their lives in the fields and woods,
in a peculiar sense a part of Nature themselves,
are often in a more favorable mood for observing her,
in the intervals of their pursuits,
than philosophers or poets even,
who approach her with expectation."
Henry David Thoreau
Don't you mean "bead chain"?
