    Default Bit of a chance here

    I was watching a video the other day of Fran Betters tying his Ausable Wulff. I will post a link when I find it again. Great tier he was!!

    Anyway, when he tied in the tail material, I thought: "Gee, that's too long". But, he went on to explain that a longer tail helped maintain the balance of the fly.

    Right or wrong for a Gray Wulff, I tried the same thing. It certainly does land correctly on the table surface.............

    Hi Byron. It sounds logical to me. But, I don't think a fly landing upright on a hard surface is any indication of how it might land on the water. The hook will break the water surface tension. I used that test myself until I thought about what I was doing.

    Had you not pointed it out I would only have considered the tail on the long ish side of normal. It certainly looks a well balanced dressing.

    That fly looks terrific. I have always been a fan of the longer tail.
