    Default Making your own knife

I guess the title should have read "Making Knives with Hand Tools." Does anyone make their own knives? I'd like to learn how. I haven't the faintest idea of how to go about it, what to make the blade out of, tools, etc. I do have a dremel tool if that helps. Are there beginner books or tutorials to which I can be directed? Thanks

Depending on what kind of knife you want to make, you might want to start with a kit. Woodcraft has a number to choose from incuding this one on clearance which is a great way to give knifemaking a try without abig investment. Just a thought... http://www.woodcraft.com/product/202...knife-kit.aspx

I had a friend who use to make them out of spring steel from old car leaf springs. I think all he used was a cutting torch and a bench grinder. A dremel is gret for the sharpening or finishing but not so for the heavy duty grinding or cutting the blanks out.

440C is the best material. There are blanks available from several sources, or if you want to go from scratch, most steel service centers should be able to get it. Expect to pay a big premium for buying such a small quantity from a steel supplier, though.
