Thread: Wanted: your recommendation for transporting H2O

Default Wanted: your recommendation for transporting H2O

Spending long days along the stream during summer's warm days places a high demand on your body for water. My days are certainly more comfortable when I keep hydrated.

My question is what type of container do you use for transporting drinking water on stream? Or do you choose to purify water on location? There seems to be plenty of hydration bladders, canteens, and bota bags available. Your recommendation for manufacturer and source would also be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance
    Eric

I use a Hydration Bladder. CamelBak is my brand of choice.

I like the ones in the UnBottle the best because of it's insulation.

    Ooops, ...

I drink right out of the river

For visitors, ... I'll filter water into a Nalgene wide mouth (screws right onto the filter)

See the nearby thread on water purification. I use the Katadyn water purification bottle.

I like the camel back idea, however i find most camel backs to small. so i modified my backpack cut a slit into my back pack sewed around the slit and then used a hot glue gun to help it hold together and no problems, been that way for a year at least.

I also dont use a vest so that is why i use a backpack.

I appreciate everyone's input so far. I guess I will give the hydration bladders serious thought, as they appear to be popular with you.

I will continue to follow the thread on water purification as well.

    Thanks

On a lot of the water I fish I will drink right from the stream. Never have got sick from it in 40 some years of fishing. If I am fishing a stream where the water may be questionable I carry a water bottle in the back of my vest. I do use the hydration pack when I am hunting or fishing and have a long walk to look forward to. The hydration pack I have is nice because the bladder is insulated so the water stays cool plus it has a large pocket on it for carrying other items like a lunch or flashlight or whatever. Cabelas has a nice selection.

Nalgene is mentioned, it is the best plastic container for water, been around since the early 70's. Why bother with all the fuss... you can buy water at any gas station, party store, grocery....in vending machines. It is clean and pure and cheaper than all the fancy gadgets. I can get a case of 24 on sale for around five bucks. Put your energy and money into something else...like a new boo rod.

At one time in my life I did a lot of cross country hiking. We got most of our water from springs when we could find them, but often we would use water from streams but would add a few drops of chlorox and wait about 30 minutes.

I drank from streams back then with a sierra cup at high elevations but I wouldnt do it now.
I use hydration bladders when I am hunting, but normally keep a couple of bottled water in my truck for drinking since I tend to drive from spot to spot this time of year. I normally have about 5 gallons of water in a jug in the back of the truck also. Why so much? In the areas I go to there may not be much help around and 5 gallons can help fill a radiator if needed. Also if I decide I need to do some cooking ( yes I pack a stove around also)

I like the idea of a hydration bladder for flats fishing (for bonefish). The one time I did that I had a fanny pack with some bottles and that just didnt work out so great. Sliding the bottles in and out took both hands and I didn't like letting go of the rod to do this. If I get to do some bonegfishing again Ill have hydration bladder.
