    Default Teaching a New Fisherman

Just got back from a pleasant morning teaching GalFarmer (who I hope joins us on this site) to cast and fish. We spent an hour on basic casting and then a couple of hours casting for fish.

I was amazed at how quickly she was able to get the basics. Unfortunately she did not get to catch any fish (yet) but I am sure in the next week or two she'll have some fish to her credit.

Here is her reminder, as I hope she is at least lurking.

    10:00 - 2:00 (position)
    1..2..1..2.. NOT 12... 12... (timing)
    Less wrist, more forearm.

"Get your arm down! Relax your shoulder! When you make the back-cast, say, "Big Brown Trout!" before you even think of starting forward!
    "Stop that rod!"
"Less effort, just make the tip do the work."

Slide your hand on the underside of an imaginary shelf, NO CLOCK also no windshield wiper.

Just did the same thing with a friend a week or two ago. Amazed at how quickly he picked it up, funny to watch him get flustered as he was "nutmegged" by a longnose sucker

First victim of mine, and I think my cast improved a bit as I explained it.

Good to hear you are teaching more people the sport.

    Hey Jed,
Good for you and good for her! Take the advice of J.C. I have yet to meet him but I have found his casting advice to be bullet proof!
