    Default Winter stones

Took a hike along the Potomac Thursday, hoping to take a gander at waterfowl and saw a few early brown stoneflies. Past few days have been unseasonably warm (60s today); if it would hold, I'd consider taking a shot at the nearest trout stream with some small dark dun CDC & Elks. Hatch usually doesn't really happen until March - I've only hit it right once in the past 6 years but it was darn good that year.

    Regards,
    Scott

Early black or brown stones can hatch in Jan. or Feb. in the East on warmer days. They develop into adults in the stream and walk out along the bottom. The so called "hatch" are really the females returning by flight to the stream surface as ovipositors. This generally takes place in early afternoon on sunny days. This slowly gets earlier as the day time lengthens so that it is about 11:00 AM by the end of March.

Watch for fish working some real skinny water for the migrating nymphs.

Sounds like a great time to work some Stonefly Nymphs down along the bottom and also very close to shore. The fish will be keyed in on them ready for a great winter snack.

Not trying to high jack this thread but, how do you get such close ups of your flies? I was trying last night with my point and shoot camera and it would not focus that close, even on Macro setting

Don't know what kind of camera you have, but with my 5 yr old Canon Powershot SD750 I just put it on Digital Macro, drop the ISO to 80, point and shoot (Ott light overhead, cheap clamp-on 60 watt light from the side). Here's a #20 Pheasant Tail:

NewTyer and Dub, don't worry about hi-jacking my thread, that kind of pirating is welcome.
