Default Trying to Tie a Loop Wing Dun Pattern

    Hi,

I've been tying for a long, long time. One fly pattern that I like and does not seem to get much attention is the Loop Wing Dun. There is very little on this fly pattern on youtube, etc. I'm not sure if I'm doing a good job on this pattern or not. If not, I would like to know what it is that I may not be doing correctly.

Thanks for looking and appreciate your comments.

I find myself refering you to GB again.

In my opinion you should bend the front 1/3 of the hook up as in Gary's pattern. Gary told me why he did this but I have since forgotten. I think this slants the loop wing backwards for a more realistic profile. Secondly, tie the loop fibers in where the bend starts and not in the middle of the abdomen of the fly.

Gary cuts the hackle off of the bottom for a lower profile fly that is more realistic.

See the instruction and example below:

Thanks Silvercreek. The reason I tied the wing fibers in so far back was to get a loop wing which sweeps backward. Granted, I probably overdid it. I was trying to get a wing that looks like Gary's son Jason has on his version shown below.

Wing looks terrific. Body taper is excellent. So shape is right on.

I think the proportions can be improved a bit. On a dry fly, the length of the body = tail = wing = hook shank = 1.5 hook gap. What stand out is the tail is about 1/3 too long.

That'll fish. I like using something that will float (and I can hopefully see better) for the wing instead of feathers. Have been using Para Post with good effect. Especially useful in the smaller sizes. May not look as classy, but sure floats longer than any natural material.
