    Default super hair

I've just gotten into "bucktails and streamers" and need to get brown, white and olive bucktails, unless "super hair" is a substitute for them? Since this is an older book, maybe super hair hadn't come along yet. I have a lot of super hair on account of tying midges with it, but surely there must be applications for it in streamers. Any ideas?

Works for streamers but in my opinion not a reasonable substitute for bucktail for freshwater flies. For saltwater fishing, I'd probably change my opinion. YMMV.

I used chartreuse and white for pike flies in the 5-6 inch length range. Very effective and durable.

I've used it on Clousers. Even Bob Clouser does!

I use A LOT of superhair, but it is NOT a substitute for bucktail.
    First, it has no floatability.
Second, it will adhere to itself when wet, making one large piece.
Third, it will droop when wet.

Thanks for the responses - off to search for bucktail. What patterns might I use the super hair for?

It's the main ingredient of an Alba-clouser; great fly for false albacore. Haven't tried a freshwater version, though.

I recommend you stay with bucktail and Natural Furs for streamers. Superhair is best on Saltwater, Pike and other toothy flies

I was first introduced to Super Hair by Bill and Kate Howe for tying their ALF and Flashy Profile Fly patterns. Also Bob Popovics Surf Candy is another well known fly tied with super hair.

Super hair is often used as material to add stiffness to flies that also incorporate softer wing materials such as Angel Hair, Wing 'N Flash, etc. An example would be Dave Skok's Mushmouth series of patterns.
