The post about stripping or reeling in fish got me thinking. Some said they reel in a big trout. One said over 8" they'd reel it in. Is that a big trout? What do you think is a big trout ? For me big is over 18".

I'm with you Greg. Maybe even 20" to 28"

she who dies with the most toy's wins.
depends on the fish and the location
Bow river 24+
crowsnest river 16 inch +
crappie 10inch
Let me also say that catching any rainbow, brown, or brookie always get my heart pumping and puts a smile on my face, too. Love to fish for bluegills, too, just to keep that straight.
Greg
yea i agree with nick only because im a bow river fisherman aswell. any fish under 20 dosnt turn my crank too much on the bow a fish in the 20-23 inch range make me wana land it and a fish 24-29+on the bow makes me hoot and holler. if i were on a cuttie stream or the crowsnest river tho it would be way different a fish in the 6-12inch range would be one too get in handle carefully and let go fish in the 14-18inche range would be a nice fish and a 20incher would be an amazing fish..totally depends on fish species and the river or lake your fishing. jstu liek salmon fishign for big chinooks a 20-30lb fish is a dink a 40-50 lb fish is a biggin and a 60+ is a trophy...
ahhh I think the post referring to anything over 8" fish beeing put on the reel would be me. No thats not a big fish but I like top get most fish on the reel so to keep me from getting out of habit that's what I do. In my book a big fish is 18"+. I have caught a few 18" cutts that have weighed three punds so these fish obviously eat well. Generally speaking I refer to size of fish based on the water I am fishing, as examples:
Madison River 20"+ browns or bows
Hyalite Reservoir 18" cutts
Hebgen 20" browns or bows
Skull Lake 8" overpopulated brookies LOL
Beartooth Mtn lakes 20" cutts, 16" brookies
Gallatin River 16" mainly bows
Selway River 16" cutts, bows, or cuttbows
In the end I fish many different waters for several different species of trout and have different expectations for each water and species.

At this point in my FF-ing career, a 'big fish' is anything that can actually turn the reel.
I'm a rookie, and the only rod I have is an 8wt. Unfortunately, the only thing I've been able to catch so far are bluegill, none of which have been able to take line if I feed it to them, much less take it off the reel.
Can't wait for my first fight. . .
Greg,
IMHO, a "Big Trout" is relative to the water you happen to be fishing and what is the average for that water. Two examples:
1 - You're fishing some small stream that has nothing but natives averaging 6-7". A big trout for that water may be 10".
2 - You're fishing water where people consistently catch 18-20" trout. A big trout may be in the 24"+ range.

I've been fishing the Urban lakes too much - anthing over 3" !!!!
