Default Something a bit different for me.... A spinning rod!

This is a bargain basement spinning rod I made for one of the guys down at the VFW. His wife ordered it and needed to keep costs down, so I went super basic with a Custom Builder Kit from Mudhole.

As can be seen, it is one of my Military Rods. The blank came as a single piece so I cut and made a spigot ferrule. Ron is an Army Vet from the VietNam era and his service ribbons reflect that.

The wraps were done in black with an accent of 3 turns of metallic gold. I dressed the cork up a tad with some green burl and put the graphic in the split grip area to change things up a little.

    Thanks for looking!
    Kevin

He's going to have a hard time watching for the fish to strike, when he has a rod like that to look at! Beautiful, Kevin!

Nice job Kevin, there's a line from one of the old "Jody's" that goes "Standing tall and looking good" that applies to that rod.

A Jody is a lyric song while marching, I have no idea why they are called that however, except Jody's name does get mention frequently. Usually in a bad way.

I remember Jodys from ROTC in high school. I remember Sarge had to tone some of them down a bit but someone always knew the real lyrics.

That would be something cool to work into the graphic for a DI.

I can see how you could build the male end of the spigot, by just gluing a piece of graphite in the hollow rod, but how do you build the female portion?

Most blanks only need a wrap of thread and the normal epoxy finish like you would do with a graphite rod with regular ferrules. I made the wrap on this rod cover the whole area involved. If that makes you uncomfortable, you can put an over-sleeve cut from a bit of scrap blank over the area. The spigot and the over sleeve, if you use one, should be fiberglass rather than graphite so that the added components flex with the blank and do not impair the flex.

I snag old fiberglass rods for repair pieces any time I can find them. Fiberglass pole like you see holding flags for kids' bikes or the like make really good spigot material as they are solid.

That's a very nice fishing pole Kev. Good job. Jim
