    Default Black Hills

My wife and I just returned last night from two weeks in the Black Hills. Great time! Decent to fabulous weather for camping. Caught a bunch of some sort of chub or something with spots all over them ( would have thought they were trout, but there are no trout in South Dakota). Found that my success was improved the smaller the flies I used. Wonder what I could have done if I could see to tie on smaller than #20!?!?

"there are no trout in South Dakota"
I think the rainbows, browns, brooks and lake trout in South Dakota lakes and streams would beg to differ.

    51BC,

As one who has tramped all over the Paha Sapa (Black Hills) I offer my congratulations on your success at catching the rare and elusive Lakota Spotted Chubs (as there are no trout in the Black Hills). Wee flies are often the key at this time of year. Considering the nature of the Lakota Spotted Chubs, you also have my thanks for not posting pictures of them.

I'm sure HRH Betty will also offer her congratulations because she often chases after those self same chubs.

Actually, there are no trouts in the Black Hills. REE is correct, they are the most elusive, and very rare, Lakota Spotted Chubs. They do vary in color combinations, similar to the rainbows, brookies, and browns found elsewhere, so it is understandable how the confusion could happen. Pretty fish, I might add. Quite partial to the very tiny flies.
Really am glad your trip was such fun!

Me thinks we had better all put on our waders as the buffalo droppings are getting really deep here

Some day I will also have to try those LSC's.

That looks like it would make good dubbing. Did you get a supply while you were there?

Old saying...When the chips fall....the buffalo is empty. Okay, maybe you had to be there.

After seeing that nice pic of all that meat on the hoof I was reminded that "Vegetarian" is actually a very old Lakota word. Translates as "Lousy Hunter".

Sorry about my confusion about trout in South Dakota. I didn't realize the rare Lakota chub came in so many color phases. Now you've got me wondering if I'm catching trout or some kind of chub here in Iowa.

The rare Lakota Spotted Chub, do not photograph well, so there are no pictures to compare to your Iowa trouts. More than likely, the LSC are only in the magical Black Hills. REE is also correct <isn't he amazing?> about the Tatanka! One fun pass time, is buffalo tipping! If you see one just standing there, you can sneak up on it, and tip it over!! Ah, the fun!
