    Default Tip Top Size?

    Hi All,

I see tip tops listed from say "3.5 to 6.5" or so, but don't see a description of what the units are. Is this value the size of the bore diameter, that fits over the rod tip, in 64ths of an inch?

    Thanks and regards,

    Gandolf

I "Borrowed" this off another forum.

Tip tops are sized in 64ths of an inch, so a 4.5 tip top is 4.5/64 or .070". Here are the standard sizes and their equivalents. Please note that this does not refer to the diameter of the loop on the tip top, just the part that fits over the rod blank.

    For reference 1mm = .0394" or 1" = 25.4mm

I'm either going to, coming from or thinking about fishing. Jim

An anachronism that the tubes are sized in 64ths, but the loops/rings are sized in millimeters. Good thing my caliper is digital and I can use a calculator, but it shouldn't be needed these days with "official adoption" of the metric standard decades old.

I came across a similar problem when trying to size and purchase a mildrum stripper guide. Ended up buying two sizes and hoping one of them was an ID 8mm. Turns out the larger one was closest to the 8mm I was seeking

The way I remember mm to inches, in smaller sizes is my caliber, as in guns, a 9mm is a .38 caliber approximately 3/8 = .375; 7mm is approx. .30; 6mm is a little less than .25

    Cross creek,
    We are "inching towards" metric.

Our fish would be longer with metric but wouldn't weigh as much. i.e., 16"= 40 cm; 5 lb = 2.27 kg
