    Default Dubbing Advice

I have been going through my Materials looking for Red squirrel dubbing
for the Nymph challenge from Byron, so far no luck. Never mind.
In the hunt, I found a box of Beaver Dubbing I got recently from Wapsi.
I have never used beaver before and I am not sure if it is a Dry fly dubbing
or it is just as useful for wet flies as well.

    Donald,

I've always considered beaver fur to be a dry fly dubbing, simply because it's naturally water resistant.

That being said, I see no reason it wouldn't work subsurface if it had enough weight on the fly to get it down where you want it.

    Donald,

I use beaver for the thorax on a number of nymph and emerger patterns...stuff works great...

Thank you gentlemen, much obliged. We hunted the beaver out three or four hundred years ago in the UK.
I did not know that it was naturally water-proof. I shall have to give it a try.

    Donald,

When I tie a dry fly, beaver dubbing is my favorite dubbing. It makes wonderful thin bodies, and as mentioned, is naturally water repellent. Muskrat also falls into that catagory. Makes me wonder about duckbill platypus dubbing though.

    Donald,
Don't tell me there are no squirrels running around there in Scotland????

I've got the squirrel skin OK, but I shall have to find something to substitute for the Antron.
I think I have something. I have some STS Trilobal Dubbing that should do. I hope to get it
    dressed and photo'd soon.
It is amazing what you find whilst looking for something else.

Right. Anything that gives off a sheen would work.

Donald, there are plenty of folks in the SE USA who would be happy to help you out with some beaver brood stock, all you want.
