Thread: Boudreaux fly

    Default Boudreaux fly

I was reading an old article by Bob Boese tonight about a fly he calls the Boudreaux. (The article is titled "Namesake Flies") I had never heard anyone mention this pattern, but my curiosity will make me tie a few up to test out. Looks like a fairly simple tie.

I'm thinking it would be great for shell crackers....

Looks good. I think I will try a few. Also I think that using either Emu or Ostrich in lieu of the rooster hackle might work.

Well thanks, Ed! (in my best Jonny Carson impersonation)

I just tied up a couple with silver tinsel and grizzly hackle. They will catch fish! Chris, I haven't ever caught many shellcrackers, but from what I understand about 'em, you're probably right.

Best fly ever. We had a roundtable discussion the other day and Ray Boudreaux has developed a size 4 version he uses for redfish -- and it works. I still like it as a dropper below some floating fly, but many around here used two in tandem and drag the bottom. I tried that this afternoon and took several nice bluegill. bluegill.jpg

Nice fish, Bob! I took three Boudreaux flies out for a test drive tonight. Two were silver with grizzly hackle, and one had a body made of UV red krystal flash and grizzly hackle. I'll tell ya what, folks.... this fly works! Looks buggy in the water, and something about it triggers strikes. I put mine a foot or so under a Thingamabobber, and that Thing just wouldn't quit dancing!
Excellent, simple fly. Well worth tying up a mess and throwing at some fish!
