Default Made my first two furled leaders.

They came out pretty good too! I used 6/0 waxed uni thread. I used the directions from here: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/freaner/furling/furled.htm[/url:600d4] But when I finished making what I thought was a 8' leader it only measured 6'. I measured my pegs over and over and there in the rigth spots. I havn't moved the pegs to attempt a 10' or a 12'. I was just currious when they say a 8' leader do they mean 8' of uni thread or 6' plus tippet?

    TimS,

Some manufactured furled leaders are also short of the marked length, an 8 foot leader is actually 6 feet long. The additional two feet is for tippet added to give the total of 8 feet. Could be the directions make the same assumption.

The legs shrink when you twirl them.

    hey Tim

I built a board accoring to Henk's figures[/url:7b03e] which gives individual legs of 88". This set up turns out six foot leaders.

I am going to guess that your board's set up is similar? If longer leaders are desired just set up accordingly.

There is an interesting set of photos over on Hans' website showing Jim Cramer furling leaders with little blocks of wood[/url:7b03e] No board at all, freehand set the length as you so desire! I have never tried it so can't report on how easy or hard it might be.

I have never made a furled leader but thought I would give it a shot. If I am understanding correctly You twist the strands together and then put it back on the hooks using the same hook and twist it in the opisite direction to secure it together is this correct? I know dumb question but sometimes I am a little dense even after reading the instructions

there are two strands parallel to each other. Both are spun in the same direction (doesn't matter as long as its the same).

Then both are brought together on one hook each end and the entire set of both are spun in the opposite direction that they were spun as individual strands.

Please feel free to email me if there are any other questions.

I recommend looking at the various web pages on the subject. Now that I think about it there is a sponsor here on FAOL that sells a DVD showing the whole process (picture equalling a thousand words)
