Thread: Recent ties

One of my many purposes in life is to make all you folks feel better about how well YOU tie flies!
    So...below is my junk.
I got my first issue of Fly Tyer magazine last week, and amongst the many patterns shown in the mag, a few caught my eye.

One was the Epoxy Bead Minnow. I had tied these up before, but I think my previous ones were smaller. I made 3 over the weekend, all on a #6 Streamer hook. I thought these turned out well, and look like they'll catch some fish:

I also made this streamer pattern (I apologize for not remembering the name given in the magazine...maybe somebody here can help me out with that?). I modified it a bit by adding epoxy over the eyes and head thread wraps (which makes it less attractive, probably...but only to us):

And, although I didn't have any "opal tinsel", I cut a strip from some bright flashy Christmas bow material, and used it for the body on this soft hackle:

Really nice looking flies Dave. I think the streamer may be a Nine-Three, or a variation of it

Dave-Dave-Dave - What's the prob? - those all look great, and if the fish don't like em, they'll just have to get over it! LOL!!!

    Best regards, Dave S.

I am still waiting for my copy of the magazine to arrive. Dave you did a great job on those flies. I must admit that I have never used epoxy, always felt intimidated. But thanks to you....I might just have to experiment a little. Thank you

Disclaimer...I used Clear Cure Goo in lieu of epoxy. I love that stuff!

Hey there Dave, that is a super job with that Clear Cure Goo... Did you use flexible Clear Cure or Hard?

I used the "Thin" on the Epoxy Bead Minnows, which cures hard. I think so far I like that the best (better than the "Thick" or "Flexible"). I used the "Brush-On" for the eyes/head of the feather streamer pattern above. Unfortunately, the product in my bottle is rather thick....sort of gel-like, so it was hard to control and so I put on more than I intended.

CCG has come out with some other varieties, including the "Tack-Free" stuff. Mine are the older versions, and I usually brush on a quick coat of Sally Hansen's over the top to seal it and remove the "tack". I will definitely be ordering more when my supply runs out!
