Has anybody handled one of these reels? Does it have more of a flat or mat finish than the Trion? How do you like this reel? Thanks for any help.

I used to have one. It was very stout reel. I don't think it will ever wear out. Mine was a salt water trolling reel fininshed in red. There was never anything wrong with that reel for over 50 years. It was quite simply what quality looked like in 1950. I should have never sold it, but I just didn't use it. I used the proceeds to buy a really nice bible and leather bible case for my wife, so I quess it was worth the swap.
I don't know what their line of fly reels look like, but if they are anything like the old trolling reels, they're worth it.

What I have seen of them is a polished finish.
The only Pflueger President I know of is the model originally designed for Sears by Ted Williams and manufactured by Pflueger. It was and remains an excellent saltwater fly fishing reel. A fishing pal of mine, Bob Young concentrates on finding Presidents and Vom Hoffe Taurus reels for his southern saltwater flyfishing. He has taken sails, marlin, dorado and just about everything else with them at Loreto over the years.

Well, it appears that the name "President" is a little overused by Pfleuger. I thought that he was talking about this one:

It's a very smooth baitcaster, but it's still new enough that no one knows about long term reliability yet.
I can't help on the qualities and finish of this reel, but the newest Pflueger President is a fly reel, built along the lines of the Trion.
There is also a baitcast reel and a spinning reel by the same name that are currently manufactured. The idea, I think, is that you can judge a reel's quality by the name--as long as you're familiar with the brand.
Pflueger is currently resurrecting a lot of the older names in its brand, and that's why the confusion with older models of reels.
The President fly reel is a large arbor reel as opposed to the Trion that is mid-arbor. The President is lighter than the Trion in comparable models, of which there are five. The largest is rated for a 12-weight with 300 yards of backing.

Don't know if this is true or not but I was told that the Pflueger President is the same reel as the Orvis Mach III except for a couple of cosmetic differences. Here's links for both. You can see some striking similarities.

I am presently using 2 different model Trions 7-8 & 9-10(fly reels) for saltwater. The finish on the President is the same as the Trions. The difference is that the Presidents will hold more backing. The body is a tad different, the Drag is the same. I have had zero problems using pflueger Trions for larger fish in the salt and would expect the same to be true with their new President models.
