I can't say about fly fishing but there's a lot of feed lots in Kansas.

Looks like the dreaded Asian Carp.

My guess (based on reading a fish book). A gizzard shad.

shad does account for the spot. although some kind of shad was my first thought i had no real idea what it was. didn't fight much i've had 5" gills tussle a good deal more. the education continues.

    Hi Wes,

One more vote for a shad. I never try to touch one if I catch it, the smell is pretty bad, and the smell sticks to you or your boots or clothes.

    Regards,

i didn't notice any particularly strong odor with this fish. no more or less than any other healthy fish.

Looks like a huge thread fin shad to me.. But we don't have them here so I could be wrong on that... I don't think the asian carp have the spot... and are filter feeders so not likely to be caught with any kind of gear... from what I've seen they are also the ulgliest fish on the planet!
    Wish ya great fishing,Bill

Gizzard shad! A big one at that. I hope you cut him up and used him for catfish bait...
