Try bees wax or something similar. No need to use varnish.
Sanding may not have been the best idea.
Next time try cleaning the inside of the female section with alcohol.
Good Luck.

Even candle wax will work well. I just make a few swipes with the candle across the male end and it will snug up sections that are well worn.

Hey there MM,
For the loose ones ( very) I WOULD possible re-varnish to build up thickness and then wax.

I'd rather be in Wyoming!
Most varnish is not strong enough to hold up to the wear & tear in a ferrule joint.
You could use a ureathane based rod finish like perma-bond U-40. Ureathane is much stronger and used on many factor finishes. Build up layers one at a time until an adequate fit is achieved. Dipping works wel to apply and even layer.
Let is cure completly before a second layer, it out gasses as it cures and uncured layers will cause bubbles. also make sure is is well cured before you fish with it, unless you want a one piece rod!
