I have one fly fishing outfit left from a big batch of stuff I bought to re-sell. For $90 plus shipping and insurance it is a nine foot five weight Gander Mountain guide series rod with a divided nylon covered tube. Includes a scientific anglers concepts reel loaded with line and backing. The rod is in like new condition with made in Korea sticker still on it and string for price tag still on tube. The reel and line are in good shape but not as pristine. This is a nice looking IM6 rod with walnut insert reel seat. I have cast the outfit and found the rod to ba mod to fast. The last time i researched shipping and insurance on this outfit it was $16.50 but I can't remember where it was shipping to so it might be a bit more.

    Welcome to FAOL

I see from your profile you live in Iowa. What type of fish are you wanting the rod for? You mentioned a used 5 - 8wt. Are you planning on fishing for trout in the NE part of the state or bass, bluegills and such? If you are wanting a rod for trout, I would recommend a 8" - 8 1/2' 4wt. If you are fishing for warm water species then a 6wt. I also see from your profile that you are a nursing student, so I would imagine you don't have allot of $$$ to spend right now. I am a member of the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association and our local Chapter Cental Iowa Fly Fishers. I'll ask around and see if someone have a rod, reel and line they may want to part with and isn't wanting an arm and a leg for it. If I find anything, I'll send you a pm.

I found out about the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association and I hope to go to the local chapter's meeting the first Sunday of June! I live in the Quad Cities and I have been told there isn't too much fly fishing around here. But I'll see what I can do, and worse case scenario, I get a lot of good casting practice!

Realistically, I'm primarily fishing for smallmouth bass. I go to school in Missouri, so after the summer I will be back down there until winter.

You CAN catch a small fish or trout using a little fly on a bigger weight line, right? My line of thinking was that a little rod and line can't cast big bass bugs, but a heavier weight rod and line can still cast the little guys. Is that accurate?

    Thanks Dave!

I think I'll pass on this one for now, but thank you rainbowchaser for the opportunity!

You can't go wrong with any level of rod/reel from this company.

    Good luck!
I hadn't thought of that company but I will definitely keep it in mind. Thank you for the recommendation!

If you are fishing for smallmouth, then you want to be looking at a 9' 6 or 8wt. A 7 wt would be a compromise. I fish for smallmouth allot here in Central IA and the 6 & 8 is what I primarily use. Most of the time I tend to lean towards the 8 due to the size of flys I normally throw ( #6 on up) and also because I want to get the fish in as quickly as possible and get it unhooked and back in the water.

Good luck on your search for an outfit.

Cabela's just announced a fly outfit sale for rod/reel, flyline and backing for $89. Check their home page.

    Karli,

I have a Cabela's Genesis 9' 5wt combo with rod on reel case I'd be willing to let go. Comes with a SA Master Headstart line (used but serviceable) and a 5wt DT line I bought for the rod but never used. Not sure on the price, but PM me with your range and we can probably work something out. Not sure on shipping charges, but I'd expect around $15 insured.
