Just a question about furled leaders, are they worth the money to buy/effort to make?
I fish for trout, dry fly mostly if at all possible.

I love them. I experimented with ones made frm tying thread, tipet material and even silk sewing thread. The ones made from UNI 6/0 thread work the best for me (trout) They last an entire season and then some with a few changes of the tippet. I tried to convince some og my fishing buddies but they prefer the knotless leaders. I guess it's to each his own...
I make my own and can get three 9' leaders from a single 2 dollar spool of thread. The jig set up cost about 5 bucks worth of scrap wood. I can build furled leaders much faster than hand tied leaders. They don't cost me very much more than time....
The only time I don't use them is for nymphing on streams where I need to adjust the leader length ot depth often. Then it's easier and faster to cut into a knotless mono leader.
is there anywhere on the net that explains how this is done?

There are several how to sites on the web by googling furled leaders. JWW
Contact Kathy Scott, she makes real nice one's and she also has a perfect How To CD. John

Fly fishing and fly tying are two things that I do, and when I am doing them, they are the only 2 things I think about. They clear my mind.
Hi,
I've always thought they absolutely excel for dry fly fishing - Darrell Martin wrote a lot about them in his Micropatterns book - but yesterday I had a call from an FAOLer who just adapted his to a heavier material and has been fishing for bonefish, and sails, and snook

Kathy,
I have friends in Denmark who have been using furled leaders for seatrout fishing (saltwater dwelling brown trout) off the Danish coast for years now. The base material is monofilament. Thread furled leaders, such as I prefer to use for my own freshwater trout fishing, do not take to use in salt water as well.
Cheers,
Hans W
