My grandson and I

got in a good workout at a catch and release pond this morning. He's thirteen and has been tying his own flys for about 6 months. Today he caught his first trout on a EHC he tyed. First time he caught one on his own fly. He was grinning from ear to ear.
I brought 6 fishes to hand and LDR about 8. The best bug of the day was a flying black ant tyed by Cal E Batis of Texas. I got the fly last year in an FAOL fly swap and have been waiting for the right day to use it. We were gearing up at a picknic table and a big ol' flying black ant landed on the table in front of me. I took that as a sign and tied Cal's on. First cast, BAM! About an 18 incher took it.
There's nothing like taking a kid fishing. We both had a good time and enjoyed each other's company.

your young son's first fish on a fly is never forgotten. your post opened the pages of time to my young son's first oh so many years ago. thanks and god bless you and your son.

There's nothing like spending time with your children or grandchildren. My grandchildren love for me to take them fishing, however, my grandson just got his drivers license, confiscated my truck to take his sister and himself to school, (that's a good thing), but left me without transportation to and from work. I think I will take him fishing and give him a good dunking. (Nope, can't do that either. he's much stronger than I am.)

Its great when you can teach our youth skills that will not only enhance their perrsonal experiece, but also give them a deeper appreciation of the sport and the resource!
