    Default weed gaurds

Does anyone have or know where to get weed gaurds for bass flies?

You make them yourself out of monofiliment such as Hard Masons 15# Mono. Here's a demonstration of one method. There are other methods as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlb_qnBq46Y

    Michael,

I make all my weedguards from 'cheapie' mono that I buy on large spools from WalMart. I find this bargain basement monofilament to have the correct attributes for weedguards, a bit too stiff and not limp at all. Basically the same things that make the 'hard mono' desirable without the expense. I use 15 pound stuff for hooks from size four down, and for larger hooks I use 25 pound. Costs around $2 for several hunded yards.

You can use a single loop, which I do on most flies, and a double for flies that you are going to throw into the really thick stuff. I've found that the double loop is only needed for fishing big bugs and streamers in hydriilla or similar slop...everything else the single loop works fine.

    Good Luck!

    Buddy,
I couldn't have said anything different or better. I have spools of cheap mono up to 25#. Never thought about what size mono for what size hook, just whatever seems right at the time for the pattern. After lashing on the mono is one time you should probably always use a CA glue.

I have found that when tying mono weedguards, I'm better off without them. This is of course, personal opinion- I tend to throw my bugs into some gnarly cover. Last year I googled wire weed guards and found Metz sold some. Here's a pic of a bug sporting one. I tie it in before I spin the heads on the flies. Getting the right measurement is crucial.
