yes, I have one on a 6 wt. rod. It makes sense for how I use my rod. Just yesterday I was looking at a website (maybe Abel) and they put butts on all their rods. It makes sense to me. I find it much easier to work the rod with a fighting butt on it.

    Yup !!

6wt and up. Really helps to ease the pain after (while) long fight.

I have them on all of my 7wts and higher. I find them useful when fighting a good sized fish.

Since I started fishing a 6wt in saltwater I have decided that I probably wouldn't purchase another 6wt without them. It seems it used to be that you didn't see fighting butts on 6wt rods except for some very expensive 'saltwater' models (i.e. Sage RPLX, RPLXi, etc) but they are showing up on more mid range models as an option.

If I were having a custom 5wt built, I might put a butt on one of those also. I have been fortunate enough to catch some very large trout on 4 and 5wt rods and wished I had a fighting butt on the rod at the time as I needed to stick the rod butt into my body to get some leverage.

Temple Fork Outfitters has some EVA foam rounded butt caps that will fit most uplocking and many downlocking reel seats. They retails $5 for three. I bought a couple of packages and keep them in my tackle bags so they are available as I need them. I have not seen them for sale anywhere on the web and wouldn't have known about them except a local shop owner saw them in the '06 wholesale catalog and told me about them.

On 7wt and up their fine but I dont like them on my 6wt's.I just sold a SC LU saltwater 6wt because I didnt like the butt and the full wells grip.I much prefer my Loomis IMX or my Sage RPL 6wt's in fresh and saltwater. To me a 6wt doesnt need a fighting butt.If your fighting a fish that long on a 6wt that you need one, then its probably time to use a bigger stick.

If you build your own or have a rod built, you can choose a removable fighting butt and have the best of both worlds. My next rod will be a 10' 6wt with removable butt for stillwater.

    Anthony,
If you have a up-locking reel seat, you don't really need one. As long as the reel spool won't get snagged in your clothing you'll be fine.
I have a 10wt with out one on it, makes little difference IMO

I detest the things. Wish the two rods I have with them did not. For me, all it does is give the line a place to half-hitch right before a big fish takes and runs.
