Default A Trout Angler Goes After Tarpon

    Joseph,

Well thank you sharing that experience. We were right there with you.

I can associate (in some way) to you. Fishing for Atlantics can be just as humbling. Like many aspects, I guess the "experience" in the salt is 10 fold more intense than on fresh, ... but the idea up here is very much the same.

    Thanx for sharing.

I feel your pain! Been there a few times, and to make it worse, I fished with the guy that taught me to cast and tie...Capt. Jon Cave. Talk about pressure from your guide!!?? Great story, and those that have never experienced a tarpon charging a fly, ya just gotta do it.
My largest was a 130# on 20# tippet. I couldn't walk for three days!

    Joseph,
Great read! Just the other day Bill C. sent out a wonderful vid. of some tarpon action. Best I've seen yet! Those reels scream when one of those big guys take off...phew!

Thanks for the story. You're a lucky man.

    Jeremy.

I am booked for this May. After reading this article I am even more pumped and also feeling a little anxious. I will get after the casting practice in earnest.
    Thanks

This may interest some you interested in chasing tarpon [url=http://www.keymedia.biz/movies/chasing_silver.wmv:edb4d]http://www.keymedia.biz/movies/chasing_silver.wmv[/url:edb4d]

It has been doing the rounds on some of the UK forums. Jamie Howard did and excellent DVD last year about fishing for bones; I look forward to seeing this one.

Plagerized from an un-remembered source but important none-the-less:

    Practice Techniques for Tarpon Casting

For those of you who are Southbound in search of The Silver King, here are some exercises that you can work on to make sure you're absolutely ready to go on opening morning!

As you re-familiarize yourself with the 12-weight, keep in mind the typical conditions that we run into. Once you've pitched the line around and got it nicely grass-stained, try these maneuvers to simulate actual conditions.

    1. Pick a windy day. Gusts to 35mph are preferable.

    2. Try to be hung over from drinking bad booze or cheap wine if at all possible.

3.Smear your Costa del Mars with Vaseline and stand on top of your SUV.

    4. Have your son or daughter rock the vehicle back and forth at random intervals, stabbing the brakes furiously on occasion.

    5. While maintaining rock-steady balance on the roof of the vehicle, hold the fly in the "ready" position, but don't cast for at least 45 minutes.

    6. Arrange to have your Significant Other sneak up, out of your view, and let loose the family dog--which simulates the tarpon.

    7. Once the dog is released, your S.O. should begin throwing firecrackers at you (to stimulate adrenaline flow) and begin yelling while you make casts at the dog (tarpon). (BANG! BANG! BANG!) "10 O'CLOCK! NO! NO! FURTHER LEFT! NO, NOT THERE! GET YOUR LINE BACK IN! LOOK, HERE THEY COME AGAIN! NO, NO, TOO FAR LEFT! YOU MISSED IT! YOU MISSED IT! (BANG! BANG! BANG!) DOUBLE HAUL, YOU FOOL! AHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGG!

Repeat as necessary until you are thoroughly demoralized.

After all of THAT, our days together will seem positively heaven-sent

    Joseph

Good night!!! I was getting short of breath just reading about it.

Then there's always the same adventure...from a kayak. What we call a Florida Sleigh Ride.

It's a blast. Not 10 times more intense then west coast steelhead or east coast atlantics. About the same.

Stunning setting for a truly magnificent fish. And it ain't easy...all the more to enjoy.
