had a friend who was fishing somewhere on the south fork snake and was kicked off the stretch of the river by SS because Cheney was fishing...I thought we fought a war to get rid of royalty??? That was non-partisan horse puckey, you ask me

I used to have a very high opinion of Dick Cheney. I knew him personally 45+ years ago when Dad was the Executive Secretary for the Republican Party in Wyoming. If anyone wants to hear the story, PM me and I will tell you.
I was fortunate to be able to talk with guys like Senator Alan Simpson, the then Governor Stan Hathaway and many others like them. Back then, none of them would have condoned anyone being pushed off a stream just because a high power politician was around.
These guys were conservative Wyoming Republicans right down to their toenails and any of them would have been happy to share a stream with pretty much any of their Democratic counterparts. They argued politics then went and played golf together. They all seemed to realize that you could disagree and still be civil.
What happened to those days?
I don't have to agree with Jimmy Carter's politics to fish with him. It might be fun to argue about which fly to use, though.

Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some person ever reads.
You may win but somehow your taxes will go up...
Good fishing technique trumps all.....wish I had it.
Way back when I got to meet the First Lady Mrs. Carter. I think I was in the 7th grade and it was a real pleasure. I even got my picture in the paper with her.
I would not pay to fish with President Carter but I would surly fish with the man if the opportunity ever presented its self. Politics aside it would be fascinating to pick his brain if he was truthful and I was cleared to hear all of his answers.
I would fish, hunt, eat, drink and just about anything else with Cheney but again I would not pay for his company, contribute yes, but not for his company.
I am in a unit that provides support, field force, when the president or vice president or an Ex president comes to town. It is one of the coolest details that I do; it's been a big honor and pleasure a few times and more than a pain for others. Believe it or not the secret service thinks so too, honor and pain. But one thing I do know is Presidents and Vices can plan their itineraries but do not have a lot of input as to what has to be done to provide security for them.
I don't want to hi-jack a thread but if you were president or vice president and wanted to go fishing and that meant bumping guys up or down stream would you and if you would how often would you do it and would you do it in an election year?
Thanks Old Man GO IRISH!
It's not about royalty it's about security. There are too many nut cases out there who would love to take out a VP of the USA. That would be a nice scalp for Al Qaeda to hang up on Al Jazeera. The VP get armed escort coming and going through traffic in DC and anywhere else they go. The Secret Service do not let their political leaning affect the protection they give the office holders, they just put themselves between them and bad guys when necessary.
I had a friend rescued from traffic court because he was on a hotel staff and had been cleared, so rather than run a security clearance on his assistant they handled the traffic ticket for him.
