We had a rather in depth thread on this topic not too long ago.

The below links will show you no less than 12 (mostly) distinct different types/styles of tools called whip finished made exclusively for fly tying.

    Standard (English Style):

I use my fingers. Don't see any reason to use a whip finisher.

    Thumbs up Matarelli

    Matarelli Extended Reach model.
They do what the standard models do, but they can do it further down the shank of a very long hook. They're handy for stage tying larger patterns.

If it can't eat a 3/0, it must be bait !

I started on a Thompson style whip finisher about 30 years ago but quickly changed to a Matarelli as soon as I tried one. They are a pleasure to use, especially if you get a real one, not one of the knockoffs. I recently picked a Thompson style finisher at the Somerset show. I read somewhere that they have an advantage for certain types of flies. That remains to be seen. The Matarelli has served me well for many years.

I purchased a whip finisher years ago. It was made in India and the instructions were written in English by a non-English speaking India native. Never could figure it out.
