    Default Best non-chain hamburger?

Given the strong response to the best ice cream thread, thought I'd kick off this one. If nothing else, it will give us all a great list of places to eat while traveling.

Forget about the chains. Where are the best hamburgers in the US?

In my experience, they are usually served in places that feature lots of dark wood decor and have at least 3 beers on tap. Your experience may vary greatly.

    So?

There are two places in the San Francisco Bay Area:

Clown Alley, San Francisco (North Beach) and Darby Dan, South San Francisco. My absolute favorite is the bacon chhese burger at Darby Dan.

Tessaro's in Bloomfield (a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, the original italian community).

Within the past 24 hours, your burger was mooing. And the meat in your burger would have become a prime cut of steak in any other restaurant.

oldfrat, this place is loaded with dark wood, and has about a dozen beers on tap.

The Onion Bar & Grill in downtown Spokane, Wa.
Spendy? Yes. Worth it? Yes. They come with the best onion rings you've ever wrapped your mouth around.
This kind of food will eventually kill you, but you'll die with a smile on your face and tarter sauce on your chin.
Where you go is less important than how you take the steps.

Tartar on a burger? That's something I've never seen before. Is it a local thing? Might have to give it a try...

The Bubba Burger at Deb's Place, in tiny Cross Fork, PA.

How's that for lots of dark wood? The Bubba Burger is a half pound of chopped sirloin, a half pound of thinly sliced ham, Swiss cheese, mushrooms, sauted onions, lettuce, tomato, and pickle - and it's all on one huge kaiser roll. Served with freshly sliced steak fries. Cholesterol......pfffft.

Phillip's Grocery, across from the old depot, Holly Springs, MS Rated by USA Today as the 3rd best hamburger in the USA.

I ate my first one about 1956 and my latest a couple of years back, they are still as good as when I was a kid. If you go at lunch time call ahead or bring your patientce, there will be a line. Must be time to make another trip.

Another surprise in Holly Springs, Victor's Pizza, a north Mississippi redneck and his Vietamese wife turn our some of the best pizza anywhere. History buffs will like Holly SPrings, it has several antebellum homes which were occupied by Union forces, including Grant, during the War for Southern Independence. It's also Shep Smith, Fox News, hometown
