    Default A Skunk got SKUNKED!

I'm being baby sit by my cousin for a week here @ Orange County and wow.. @ 9:45ish, his dog ripped a skunk's head off and it took 2 big shovels to clean up the mess..

Well, i was gonna ask if anyone used skunk fur for tyin flies but heres a better question. What is the weirdest & the strangest material you ever used to tie flies?

I'm really bored and i check on the BB 24/7 or so... amuse me please! i might try it!

Skunk hair if you can get the stink out is good for streamers. I have a kangaroo hide that was given to me. I have been trying to work up some patterns with it. Probably more available is porcupine quills and guard hairs. Skinning the porky is almost as much fun as the skunk. If you get it skinned and gutted pressure cook it for about an hour and then flour the cut up peices and fry them until brown. We used to spit them and roast them over a campfire too.
I can think of few acts more selfish than refusing a vaccination.

With porkies, you're better off to just pluck the quills and guard hair.( Not , of course, if you're cooking him. But if you're only after the quills/hair )
I've used pine marten and ermine dubbing . It works pretty good.

Norwegian rat. Makes a great muskrat substitute for dubbing the Adams. He made the fatal mistake of invading my garage. The rainbows in the Snake west of Ashton, Id. liked them.

Alpaca wool, and I can get all I wants in a variety of colors. I've used Poodle hair, too.

    The Guard Poodle

    Tail: Gray Squirrel
    Body: White poodle dubbing
    Wing: Gray Squirrel
    Hackle: Black

We have a pet Ferret. She's an albino. I haven't chased her down with the scissors yet...but I do occasionally eyeball her with visions of fly-patterns in my head.

Our cat has some long, ultra-soft hair, but he's survived a few years already with all of his hair intact.

Ive used the hair from the drain, and the trimmings from my beard, (too spiky for good tying) I made dubing from the lint trap after washing my bath robe. I am constatnly on the lookout for good cheep different tying materials, I realy like mink which is in the same family as skunk.

I won't go into the details here but I know of a tier who has plans for using some Emperor penguin feathers. They are very neat; small, soft and white with very stiff quills.
Considering availability I don't see them becomming very popular.

cat hair makes good dubbing...I can comb the cat, and use that, or trim a small piece if necessary, although my daughter hates that...lol...the cats don't mind too much
