Shakespeare Automatic OK fly reel

I have this old "Shakespeare Automatic OK" fly reel that I would like to use, but am having problems with it. When I pull out line, it doesnt lock very well, sometimes I have to really play with it alot to even get it to lock. When I finally do, I'll be fishing, and it will suddenly release and suck all the line back in. I've tried adjusting the tension of the spring through the knob on the side, but that doesnt seem to help. Anyone have any ideas what is wrong?
