I have tied a lot of glo bugs on 16s without seeing hooking problems. The yarn is soft enough to not be an issue, IMO. They don't have to be pretty, they don't have to be round, they just have to be a blob of a decent color.

You don't have to use real light tippet with glo bugs, either, in my experience, so you can set the hook harder than you would with a small dry. I typically fish 3x and 4x regardless of water clarity.

There is no right or wrong in this. Tie them how you want to.

On my globugs I have always trimmed the bottom of the fly to keep the gap open. I don't tie any of the yarn on the bottom of the shank and it fluffs out just fine when in the water. I tie and fish these for steelhead only so I don't use hooks smaller than the Mustad 92553#10, these are short shanked nickel plated and up eyed hooks. Very strong but I do sharpen each one before they go into my box. I like the nickel plating and I always use red thread on all colors of globugs, and I feel the flies look a little brighter that way. As usual, I don't know if the fish care as much as I do.

I use 2x strong size 12 scud hooks for my glo eggs.

Size 16 is the largest I tie in egg patterns, with 20's being the smallest. I agree with DG, they dont have to be perfect.

That's a nice collection of eggs and worms, DUB! Someone was fishing a glo bug along with a SJ worm the other day and called the combo "bacon and eggs".

Now that's a nice collection of "Bacon and Eggs", thanks for sharing. Nothing like a one-two punch of bacon and eggs on a dead-drift nymph rig to wake up trout in the early spring!
