    Default Carp flies

I added weight to these, and the tail I believe is a raccoon. Somebody gave me the tail, so I had to guess at what it was. I imagine just about any fish would go after these...but probably rough fish the most. I just made them so I haven't tried them out yet.

Thanks. I don't have any wolf tails. (or coyote) I had some tails that a guy gave me a few months ago, and decided I had better start using them. He also gave me a blue fox tail, but I am kinda saving that one for something special. What...I don't know yet...but I might not find another tail like that anytime soon. A red fox squirrel tail would look good on this fly too. I have not seen any decent ones to buy though. I like them with lots of hair, and distinct markings. I have a red squirrel tail, but it isn't very good, and I took most of the good hair off of it anyway. I think I used most of that on Lil' Joe Streamers. (all that is really is a squirrel tail wing over a hook wrapped in tinsel...still a cool fly...especially when you paint the eyes on real nice)

Have you been on Roughfisher's web site? Those patterns look like they came from JP: http://www.roughfisher.com/search/label/Fly%20Patterns

Tell me which one of my flies looks like his. I didn't even know what a Headstand Carp fly was until somebody asked me about it when I posted the first carp flies. I said no, and looked it up. I did not use any fly on the roughfisher site for my Headstand fly. (I do not see any peacock swords on their flies...as I look it up now...for their Headstand flies) Besides I do not see one that comes close to matching this fly. I do not think JP, if that is your friend used raccoon tail and peacock pheasant fibers for the shell casing..per the top fly pic. Carp flies are similar, and my top fly is similar to a friend's fly. I am sure it influenced this fly, but in no way is it a copy.

Here are a couple of links that I found on the Headstand Carp fly...that heavily influenced this fly.

When I suggested the roughfishers site, I go there often for inspiration. He has done many flies on scud type hooks with bead chain eyes and rubber legs. Your flies reminded me of his patterns, nothing was meant as a negative comment by suggesting your patterns and his are similar. It was meant to mean that they are both cool and EFFECTIVE. Carp are my most frequent targeted species and I love to chase them. I post on Texas Fly fishing and on Carp Anglers Group about carp regularly.

I personally use many patterns that are similar myself, tail material is interesting but I often do substitutions on many patterns and the fish don't seem to mind much.

After you mentioned the site, I looked at it, and they do have some great flies. I am making carp carrot flies today. This is not my pattern. I am taking it off of his site, and off of http://themrpblog.blogspot.com/2009/...rp-carrot.html (Mr. P's Carp Carrot). I do not have the hackle they mention. But I have some Hungarian Partridge...it is natural. So what I did is use a yellow highlighter, and colored the feathers. If they hold the color I will be surprised. Carp from looking at carp flies lately seem to like buggy stuff, and nymph patterns, and of course crayfish type stuff. They love bead chain eyes, dubbing, and the colors orange and green/rusty brown. These are my observations. A while back I made a Sister Carol's Carp fly. I also have a few San Juan worms I made a while back. I read they like them too. A couple I made with a bead in the middle. Now, all I need to do is find the carp around here and try these patterns out.
P.S. Yes, that roughfly site is really good. It is inspirational. I may have to tie some of those patterns up too.
