This is my current October caddis. Tied up about thirty last year, used them all a couple times each. Only problem is that they need to be dried out between fish.
Hook: Dry fly #10
thread: 8/0 Uni dark brown (camel)
dubbing: not sure, something burnt orange and spiky
wing: 4 good natural dun CDC feathers tied to match the hook shank
Jack, you inspired me to dig deeper into the tying boxes and find the materials, and I tied up 13 flies last night in #12, as a warm-up to the box of 100 #10 hooks I bought...
The dubbing I used for the best version is "Paxton's buggy nymph dubbing" from Metz, in, of all things, October Caddis color. Go figure. Remind me to buy some the next time I see any, cause I bought this from The Fly Shop in Redding, CA, which is a bit outside my normal buying range now, and I only have enough for a couple dozen flies.
Other dubbing I have in that color class is Superfine in cinnamon, which I used on the #12s but it dubs too thin for good caddis bodies, IMO. I also have a package of Hareline dubbin in Cinnamon Caddis, which is a bit buggier, but not as buggy as the Paxson's. It is also a hare darker .
Like I said in the above post, tie lots, since one good fish will drown the CDC until it can be revived (paper towl, dashboard, sunlight...)
Ive been thinking this one might work on the swing.
Shaky;

Rick -
That looks like a fly that Joe won't have to eat - 'cause the fishies will.

The fish are always right.
I've tied 52 October caddis dries so far this week...
A dozen left in the box from last year...
two dozen of an old standby on order...
PMDs and mahoganies coming up next week...
think I have enough?
