Thread: Wind Knots

    Default Wind Knots

I know that this has been discussed before, and I quick search lead me to find the answers to my problems, but I just wanted to describe how successful I was yesterday at making wind knots. Beyond the usual knots in the tippet (I don't get them in the leader, just the tippet), I managed on three occasions to tie riffling hitches on my flies, and twice I managed to tie the riffling hitch around the post of a Parachute fly that I was using.

I dare you, just try to do that on purpose!

Flyfishing is a drug. It's addictive, it can be expensive, not many others will understand it, it is possible to get others hooked, and everyone has a favorite place to get their fix, but there's no hangover in the morning (from the fishing at least).

I have managed to tie so many knots into my leader using a 2 handed rod with one cast I had to replace the leader. Beat that.

Once, I got a wind knot in my flyline. Not the leader, the flyline...I couldnt believe it. Luckily, it was really easy to fix.

In my last fishing trip I tied a giant loop on the leader with at least three other wind knots in a single cast. I had to replace the leader it was in ruins!

Once I tied a double surgeon's knot on a back cast and untied it on the front cast.

Wind Knots are how I used to keep track of how many fish I caught!!

Seriously though, I've found that most of my wind knots come from trying to lift and cast to much line. I've even tied them around the rod!!

I now have a mark on my line (Red Sharpie Pen) at my "Comfort Zone". I strip in untill I see the mark at the tip top before I attempt another cast.

I wish I could say that Jack but I can't seem to keep my fish to knot ratio even. Plenty of knots, not so much on the fish.
