Thread: Backpacking rod

  1. #1

    Default Backpacking rod

Can anyone suggest a good light weight backpacking rod that will break down to a pretty short length (maybe a 5 piece or so)? Nothing real expensive because it will be knocked around a bit. I'm hoping to use it in the Adirondacks (NY) so a short 3 or 4 wt. sounds about right to me. I looked at the cabela's stowaway but wanted to see what else is out there. Thanks

    7Star,

We have a couple of Cabela's rods that might fit the bill for you. I have a 5 piece 3 wgt Stow-Away and the wife has a 7 piece 4 wgt Stow-Away. The fit and finish on both rods is very good. They are medium action, which suits our casting style. Not expensive at all. My rod breaks down to 18 inches and hers is even shorter. The rods come in a variety of line weights so your not stuck with light rods.

Cabelas Stowaway all the way... i have an 8' 6" 5 piece, they are very affordable. If you buy the combo they come with rod, reel, line, backing, a rod case, and a rod/reel case. I've had mine for 5 or 6 years now and love it..infact it was my only rod till a month ago since ive moved to the coast where theres bigger fish to be caught..

Buzz - where is that post with the 5 piece? I can't find it. Maybe they will trade me for my Cabelas 2wt. My wife wouldn't even need to know.

I saw some rods by a company called March Brown [url=http://www.marchbrown.com/:e917e]http://www.marchbrown.com/[/url:e917e] at the British fly Fair recently. They looked quite good. The feature which really stood out for me though was the fact that you could make them shorter simply by missing out a section when you put it together.

I think the Bearsden in Taunton, MA sell them. Might be worth dropping one of the Scott's there a line to ask about them?

I'm going to throw out my satisfaction with the Cabelas Stowaway. I acutally own 2 of them, as one is required by Law to never leave the back of the truck, unless it is to be immediately fished They are good rods, especially for the price.

That being said, I have had my eyes on the March Browns for a couple of years now. They look to be excellent, well made rods, and those specifically designed for travel have features and specs that I would want in a premium rod designed to be packed. Unfortunately for me, I have never had the opportunity to hold, cast, or fish with one, but I have heard excellent reviews.

The price differential is the only reason I would recommend the Cabelas rod, as I believe you stated you were on a budget (as am I), but if I had money to burn, I would have tried out the March Browns a couple of years ago.

For the money, I am very happy with my Stowaways, and yes, I would buy again. Not the biggest cannons on the block, but plenty of rod to get the job done, at a very fair price.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Add me to the Stowaway fan list.

I was looking seriously at the March Brown rods. I asked for user reports. While everyone cues in on different things, you might want to consider user reports before deciding.
