Thread: Poppers for trout

    Default Poppers for trout

Joe Brooks used to cast poppers for trout, with flyrods. That was several decades ago, but he was successful sometimes with that flies, specially with huge browns in Patagonia.
Are really amazing in stillwaters and in gentle currents.
    Did you try them, folks?

    Regards

Hey rocketfish You know no real flyfisher would use a popper for big browns. We put cute little ears on it and call it a mouse. It's quite popular on the Au Sable here in Michigan on hot summer nights
I can think of few acts more selfish than refusing a vaccination.

Raibowchaser, I also use mice. Are fantastic, also for the big bows, at least here.
The question is because is not usual the popper thing for trout.

    Obviously Photoshopped.

I think often we get too tied up in what the local favorite is based on current successes on the water and we forget to go crazy and experiment.
Instead of trying unsucessfully like crazy to work the Brassie they have been biting on, maybe we should think outside of the box a little bit.

On "The Run" near the Yellow Breeches, people used to drop bread into the creek. The trout under the bridge would go nuts. It used to drive me crazy seeing them hit the bread and ignoring flies. My revenge? Deer Hair Bread Flies. I also used white poppers. One of the trout I caught was a monster for that section, 20". Quite a blast doing that.

    Default Fish may not care-

I recently caught a nice brown using the biggest, ugliest deer hair caddis I had ever tied. Try it, and if it works, then you know you were right!

Never used a popper but I've fished a greased up Muddler from time to time. Skated on the surface & twitched or "popped" it I've drawn strikes from Trout. I should actually do it more.
