    Default Michigan Roots

Just bought a book by Thomas McGuane. Seeing his early life was spent in Michigan got me to thinking of other writers and notables that got their start here or spent time here fishing Michigan waters. Here's a few others:

    Robert Traver "AKA" John Voelker
    Hemingway
    A.K. Best
    FAOL's J. Castwell & Ladyfisher
    Doug Swisher
    Carl Richards
    Kelly Galloup

There are others please fell free to add names

I first placed this on the wrong board-Fishing reports. Sorry for error. Can the moderator remove it?

It was Rusty's book that got me back to fish my home state...and started a whole new love affair with the rivers there. (I live in Ontario now)

Simply written, it's called Seasons on the AuSable . (Scroll down and be sure to read the reviews...and yes) the best place (not the cheapest) to buy this book is from Rusty himself if you can. He's been getting into the shop in the AM.

    Hmmm...

There's Jim Harrison, too, a Reed City boy, right down US 10 from me in Evart. Come to think of it, Kelly was from Evart before Traverse City.

And in cane circles, there's Ron Barch and Wayne Cattanach.

Interesting McGuane and Hemingway both spent a lot of their youth here in Michigan and used it as a backdrop for some of their writings. Especially Hemingway with the Nick Adams Stories with his famous chapter " Big Two Hearted River" .
Mentioning Schwiebert reminds me of fine the foreword he penned for " Michigan Trout Streams A Fly-Anglers Guide".
