Anyone know how barred zonker strips are done commercially?

I sure thought it was funny too! My wife didn't get it though...
Big coarse bars on bunny fur are best done on the finished fly with a magic marker. The commercially dyed barred bunny skins are too finely barred and get lost when wrapped.
I would think a stainless rack would hold back some fur in barred fashion and prevent it from reaching the dye bath. That would make more irregular bars I would think.

Ducksterman, Do you mean how are the strips cut commercially? Or how are stripes applied? I don't know either way, I just wanted the question clarified. Seems like so far everyone wants convict bunnies. Jim

I know how I do it...
I go to my friends leather store and buy some spray on black (or whatever color 'bars' I want) leather dye...and the correct skins, too (he likes me, keeps the cool colors for me).
I have a 'barring stencil' I made for this...a piece of thin paneling with saw cuts every 1/2 inch....I lay this on top of the bunny skin...then spray the dye onto it....works fine for me....I can orient the stripes for regular or crosscuts...do partial skins...
Afte teh dye cures, I jsut wash the skin with good shampoo and then use a good cream rinse...let dry and cut. Works pretty good.

It Just Doesn't Matter....
Jim, I thought I answered this last night...must not have hit "Submit"....I'm talking how the stripes are applied. My experience has been similar to hap's...and I'm not totally happy with the magic marker...
Buddy...I don't know of a local leather store...wonder if there are substitutes?
Ducksterman. You can get all colors of leather dye from Tandy Leather Company. They are online. Sorry about the confusion. If you figure it out post it for us who don't know. Jim
